Firearms Examiner — Laboratory Division
Starting Salary Range
Salary Grade 11E: ($49,499 - $61,875 Annually)
Description of Duties
An opening exists in the Laboratory Division for the position of Firearms Examiner. The primary responsibilities of this position are to conduct forensic examinations of firearms and tool marks on crime related evidence, identify the microscopic markings left on evidence in criminal investigations and how they relate to firearms or tools that made these markings, conducts complete scientific test if firearms evidence using laboratory equipment, prepares documentation and reports on the results of the collection and analysis of evidence, testifies in court concerning the results of examinations, provides expert testimony on general firearms capabilities and examination methodology.
Qualifications
Candidates must have Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Physics, or a directly related science field. Over 3 years up to and including 5 years as a qualified firearms examiner. Successful completion of the firearms and tool marks examiner training program and have been qualified in court to provide expert witness testimony in the discipline of firearms and/or tool mark identifications. . Experience in an ASCLD/LAB accredited laboratory is desirable. Successful completion of the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) training course is desirable. Membership and/or Certification with the Association of Firearms and Tool Mark Examiners are desirable.
